How to Use Coral Red Dogwood in the Landscape

Plant 15 feet out from the corner of your home to easily amplify the look of your foundation planting. The coral blooms perk up the sunny side of older evergreen trees, too.

Give morning sun and partial shade in the afternoon if your summers are sweltering. Sun helps your tree produce the amazing color you love so much. Don’t plant in full shade, it likes at least four hours of sunlight a day.

Dogwoods are native to areas with slightly acidic soil. If your soil is alkaline, add several handfuls of peat moss to your planting backfill soil.

They also need well-drained soil. If you see puddles that remain for a long time after a rain event, create a raised bed (or berm!) for planting.

Apply a three-inch layer of pine straw or pine bark mulch over the root system to keep it nice, cool and moist. You’ll want to plan to reapply mulch regularly to slowly improve the quality of your soil.

Young trees need a medium amount of water on a regular basis. If your area has a long period of drought, please protect your investment by applying water. You’ll want to water the trees well each year in late fall to ensure the foliage has sufficient water.
