Do you love bright color that catches your eye in the landscape? Stand out with this amazing cultivar of native Flowering Dogwood.
Coral Red Dogwood (Cornus florida ‘Coral Red) makes a fantastic display, without being gimmicky.
You’ll never, ever grow tired of the stylish color that welcomes your new growing season in a big way.
The large, flat coral-colored bracts surrounding the tiny, button-shaped true flowers are a hot mix of red and orange. They look great for weeks on end in early spring!
This deciduous tree grows into a lovely, layered form. Upright when young, it matures into a spreading feature tree. Prune it to fit your planting site for an incredible living sculpture.
Dogwoods are typically a bit slow to push out their summer leaves. Please be patient, you’ll appreciate the nice shade when the pointed, dark green foliage does arrive.
These low-branched trees add a delightfully dappled shade to your landscape. They work hard at being gorgeous, no matter where you place them.
Once the nights start cooling down again, the leaves take on a scarlet overtone. Eventually, the entire canopy glows with multi-toned red shades.
Watch the songbirds take the perky red fruits. Why not add several birdhouses on your Coral Red Dogwood? Add a birdbath nearby and several feeders to create an oasis for local birds.
Widely adaptable, cold hardy and heat tolerant, Coral Red is very easy to love. If you want a Dogwood that goes above and beyond in terms of color, this should be your first choice.
Now…fair warning. You’re not the only one “oohing and aahing” over those fantastic blooms. Order Coral Red Dogwood today.
How to Use Coral Red Dogwood in the Landscape
Wherever you plant this compact tree, you’ll get a bold “pop” of color. Add one in front of your house to greet guests in a big way.
Plant 15 feet out from the corner of your home to easily amplify the look of your foundation planting. The coral blooms perk up the sunny side of older evergreen trees, too.
If you have a large front yard, why not create a raised berm with extra soil sculpted into gentle hills and valleys? You can truly spotlight this dramatic tree with three planted in a loose triangle on the berm.
Underplant with hundreds of Daffodils or other spring-flowering bulbs to increase the impact even further. Add Little Henry Sweetspire shrubs and groundcover Sedum to suppress weeds and add color all season long.
In the backyard, use them as a very noteworthy backdrop to your shrub border. Add several behind your patio seating for a gorgeous screen with multiple seasons of interest.
For a solid display where the canopies grow together and touch, plant them 15 feet apart on center. You’ll measure from the center of one to the center of the next.
Plant them on the high banks of a pond or water feature to enjoy their reflected beauty. Or, add them to the edge of a wooded area to brighten the transition zone.
Coral Red Dogwood isn’t shy. It will make a memorable garden feature no matter where you use it.
#ProPlantTips for Care
Give morning sun and partial shade in the afternoon if your summers are sweltering. Sun helps your tree produce the amazing color you love so much. Don’t plant in full shade, it likes at least four hours of sunlight a day.
Dogwoods are native to areas with slightly acidic soil. If your soil is alkaline, add several handfuls of peat moss to your planting backfill soil.
They also need well-drained soil. If you see puddles that remain for a long time after a rain event, create a raised bed (or berm!) for planting.
Apply a three-inch layer of pine straw or pine bark mulch over the root system to keep it nice, cool and moist. You’ll want to plan to reapply mulch regularly to slowly improve the quality of your soil.
Young trees need a medium amount of water on a regular basis. If your area has a long period of drought, please protect your investment by applying water. You’ll want to water the trees well each year in late fall to ensure the foliage has sufficient water.
After the flowers are finished, you can shape Coral Red Dogwood with careful pruning. Don’t take off too much without a pruning plan. Decide which branches to keep before you pick up your loppers.
Remove crossed branches and branches heading into the interior of the canopy. Make pruning cuts at 45-degree angles above an outward-facing bud. It’s a good idea to keep your loppers clean and sharp.
