Gorgeous Blue Color is Trouble Free!

Margarita BOP Penstemon (Penstemon heterophyllus ‘Margarita BOP’) was discovered in California by Bert Wilson. It was a chance seedling that was growing at the bottom of his porch. He claims that he never watered it or maintained it and that his kids with their bikes, their skateboards and their dogs trampled it many times. It still kept on coming back every year and blooming its intense true blue blooms until some repairs on the house were being done and two inches of concrete was poured on top of it by mistake. That finally did it in. Go figure.

Thankfully he was able to get seeds from it and propagate it and now we can offer this great plant to you! It is related to native beardtongue and is as hardy as Bert claims it to be. It loves sparse, well-drained soil (like in a rock garden or xeric landscape) and doesn’t need a lot (or any!) attention to keep it looking its best.

Soil, sunlight and water can all change the color of Margarita BOP from year to year, but it will always stay in the palette of royal blues and purple magenta, often mixed in the same flower. It is a true beauty and you’ll love having it in your garden.

This is a super-hardy plant that looks like a million bucks without any coddling necessary, which blooms spring to mid-summer.

Oh, and that name – BOP? It stands for ‘Bottom of Porch’, exactly where Bert found it.
